When business people talk about liquidity events they are not referring to a leaking bathroom in their penthouse or a rain-drenched weekend on their yacht, but rather those commercial situations that deliver a flood of new wealth, something which is happening to an increasing number of people in Western Europe. The nature of liquidity events can vary – a divorce or inheritance, for instance – although typically, most events involve the disposal of an equity holding in a corporation, business or trading company. Since 2006 wealthmonitor has tracked some 37,000 individuals who have received an estimated €241bn in new personal wealth.
