In recent years the growth of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in South Africa has shown a significant upward curve similar to that of international M&A markets, both in terms of number and size of transactions. The growth in M&A has been primarily as a result of increased cross-border M&A, black economic empowerment (BEE), private equity and public-to-private transactions. The positive macroeconomic and stable political environment, as well as the possibility of substantial growth in the future, provides a platform for increasing M&A activity in SA in the future, while M&A activity in most economies seems to be tailing off.
