2007 was the year in which the brakes were eventually put on the private equity boom of the past three years. After accounting for a quarter of overall M&A deal value in 2006, the level of European buyouts in 2007 accounted for a lesser fifth of overall M&A. Indeed, the calendar year 2007 saw 1,270 buyouts, worth EUR212.6bn, a 15% fall in value terms on the previous year. The volume of buyout deals, however, was down only 1% on the previous year. Private equity exits, meanwhile, were up some 7% in both value and volume terms to reach 676 deals worth a combined EUR119.3bn.
