It has not been an easy year and many involved in M&A have suffered. The collapse of Lehman Brothers and the resulting economic crisis has had a profound and lasting impact on the M&A arena in the UK and beyond. Private equity has suffered like no other asset class and it is arguable that it may never return to the heady level of activity which we had become accustomed to in recent years.
2009 has to be described as having two very different parts - in the first part of the year the market was focused on recovering from the near melt-down of the Financial Services industry which brought the world economy to its knees. However, by the second and third quarters, clear signs of recovery were beginning to emerge and a number of strong businesses, fresh from a period of internal evaluation and strategic repositioning, were once again keen to look towards acquisitions as a catalyst for growth.
