Overall, in 2009, North American M&A activity saw a decline of 24.7% in volume and 7.6% in value, with 3,034 deals worth US$763.4bn announced this year compared to 4,027 deals worth US$826.1bn in 2008. Activity throughout 2009 exhibited many of the same features as 2008 activity, with the lingering impact of the region’s economic crisis maintaining a strong presence in the largest transactions, but it also produced landmark strategic mergers in key sectors that are positioned for continuous consolidation going into 2010.
